Professional Basketball Coach

Butch Hays has had and continues to build upon his revered and extensive playing and coaching career in basketball, having the coaching experience of over 35 years across 3 countries, England, the United States and Australia. He is a firm believer and teacher of the traditional fundamentals of the game, but he is also beyond equipped to teach all of the new techniques of the modern game, including footwork, side step jumpers and dribbling techniques.

For his current involvement in basketball, Butch is the head coach of the Karuah Kinnections Indigenous Basketball team in Port Stephens of the Hunter Region. Karuah Kinnections are a sporting team which has been built on the fundamentals of helping the local community of young men who struggle with their mental health, as well as aiding to reinforce positive experiences and influence in times of crisis.

As the Head Coach of the Maitland Mustangs (ABA), he had the opportunity to return to and be a part of the club which he played for before officially retiring from the sport in 2012, to focus on his life outside of Basketball.

Butch has provided his experience as a Developmental Coach for 6-17 year old’s across multiple Basketball associations and regions, including Newcastle, Maitland, Wollongong, and Adelaide. Using his wealth of knowledge to help shape future talents in Australian Basketball.

Alongside former NBL (National Basketball League) alumni Mark Davis, the equally impressive Butch Hays helps coach during the one-day extensive Mark Davis Basketball Camp to help provide opportunities to young people in Adelaide. He also mentors in a similar role with current Philadelphia 76er’s point guard and 2x NBA All Star Ben Simmons in Sydney and Melbourne for the Ben Simmons Basketball Camp.

NBL stats: 232 games, averaging 18.6 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 6.0 assists per game.
